Sirniö Smith’s Village

The village of Sirniö in South Posio is well known for its smithery traditions. The international blacksmith event has been organised in Sirniö every June since 1998. In addition, the village provides experience services for tourists with blacksmith themes. Services are available to order in the summer and autumn.

The blacksmith event includes blacksmith courses for amateurs of any age, as well as other activities and programmes, including tar burning, charcoal pits and smoke saunas. The event provides the very best for professional blacksmiths, forging enthusiasts and spectators.
The Sirniö village was first settled in the 17th century. You had to be self-sufficient in the wilderness and do everything yourself. The source of self-sufficiency was the workshop where all sorts of tools and utility articles were forged from iron. The skills of the Sirniö blacksmiths were widely known during the early 20th century.

Nowadays the village has an approximate population of 100 inhabitants. Sirniö is located along road no. 863 (Posio-Taivalkoski) about 37 kilometres from the Posio centre.
