Mushroom & berry picking
The nature in Posio provides a wide range of natural delicacies, something for everyone whether you prefer sweet or sour. Mouth-watering delicacies, berries and mushrooms, ripen in the forests and swamps and wait for the pickers in the late summer and autumn. In the forests and swamps of Posio you could find for example cloudberries, blueberries, lingonberries, wild raspberries and cranberries, just to mention a few.
The first berries to ripen in July – August are the sour cloudberries, "yellow gold of the swamps", which is one of the most valuable berries in Finland. They are followed by the sweet blueberries, delicious and very healthy berry which is also titled as "superfood". Red lingonberries are usually picked in September during the most beautiful autumn colour "ruska" period. The burgundy-coloured cranberries end the berry picking season and are tastiest after the first onset of night time frost in October.
It is so called everyman's right to pick berries and mushrooms everywhere in the forest, wether the lands are state- or privatly owned. If you want to pick berries and mushrooms during your stay in Posio, you can conserve the catch in the freezers, as many of the
rental cabins are equipped with them. This way the berries and mushrooms stay fresh and they are easy to take home with you.
