Karitunturi-Kirintövaara

Karitunturi

The Karitunturi peat protection area is located to the south of the Riisitunturi National Park and borders the Park. The peat protection area is in the process of being added to the Park.
Close to Kirintövaara, from the Posio – Kirintövaara fitness trail starts a 7-kilometre trail to Karitunturi Fell. During the period from February to April, the same route is a maintained, unlit cross-country skiing trail. The distance between Karitunturi and Riisitunturi along the trail is 18 kilometres.

At the foot of the Iso Karitunturi Fell is a wilderness cabin and the fell top has a daytime cabin with panoramic views that used to be a fire guard’s cabin. The summit lies at over 410 metres above sea level

Kirintövaara Hill

From the top of the fell at a height of approximately 390 metres above sea level, Kirintövaara Hill provides fantastic views of Europe’s largest natural spring, Lake Kitkajärvi.

Kirintövaara has a cross-country skiing centre and downhill skiing slopes, and Hotel Kirikeskus sits at the foot of the fell. Kirintövaara also conforms to the requirements of competition skiers for using as a year-round practice ground. Form the hill, skiers have access to the cross-country skiing trail network covering 60 kilometres, of which over 20 kilometres are illuminated.

Using the snowmobile routes, there are connections with Ruka, Suomu, Syöte and everywhere else in Lapland.
The southern slopes of Kirintövaara have around a hundred different cabin plots in the district plan. The area is the perfect holiday destination for people who value tranquillity, being outdoors and the wilderness.
