Hirsiniemi

Hirsiniemi is a handsome ridge region that has been protected by a resolution passed by its landowner, Metsähallitus, as a national forest. Hirsiniemi is a peninsula stretching 8 kilometres in length in Lake Livojärvi, South Posio. The terrain is easy to traverse. The type of ground varies from sand to large cobble fields. The ridge has some large frazil ice formations, circular depressions as remains of the Ice Age.

You can reach the peninsula using the rough dirt road no. 863 (Posio-Taivalkoski), or by hiking along the Harjujen trail that travels via the Lapiosalmi Wilderness Centre as a continuation of the Korouoma Erauspojan trail. In addition, you can reach Hirsiniemi from Lomakeskus Livohka by walking a trail or rowing a boat across the inlet.

There are five lean-to shelters with campfire spots on the shores of the peninsula that you can access by boat or canoe, or on skis in the winter.
