Ice climbing

Ice climbing is a unique way to enjoy the beautiful nature and the rugged landscapes of
Korouoma. In the winter, the streams running down the western cliff of the canyon freeze to form frozen waterfalls that remain frozen untill the summer. Those frozen watrefalls are unique in Finland and they provide excellent opportunities for ice climbing. And the best thing is that anyone can try it!
Ice climbing possibilities in Posio are provided by
Stella Polaris Lapland and
Bliss Adventure. Trained professional guides make sure that your ice climbing experience is safe, fun and unforgettable! Please note that you should not try to go climbing the frozen waterfalls on your own, if you don't have the special equipment and experience required for individual climbing.
If you prefer to stay on the solid ground you can still go and admire the amazing beauty of the frozen waterfalls of Korouoma. The easiest way to do that is to park your car in the Saukkovaara parking place, where a 2 km long path is leading you down to the Korouoma canyon and to the frozen waterfalls. There is also a lean-to shelter and a campfire place near the falls, so you can fry a sausage and have a nice cup of hot drink during your excursion to Korouoma. Please note that climbing up from the canyon back to the parking place is quite demanding.
The Korouoma area is also excellent for snowshoe hiking and cross-country skiing. There are many lean-to shelters, open cottages and
rental cabins in the area. Please note that cell phone reception is very poor in the Korouoma canyon.
